"The House of Hades" By: Rick Riordan is exiting book based solely on the fact that it is the long awaited sequel to "Mark of Athena" in the Heroes of Olympus series. This with the quality of the author's writing and gradual roller-coaster story line style is what really drove me to start reading the next book in the series and I have not been disappointed. The series has done a good job of keeping the pace up yet providing endless details and thought provoking questions to keep the readers entertained and thinking.
One way the Riordan makes this particular book in the series so interesting by using the setting to create a immersive environment to draw to reader in and to keep them always wondering about what is going to happen next in the story. He does this through subtle hints through out the text like a change in the weather or just the general feeling of the area that the characters are currently in. These little things like even the color of the plants or the descriptions of animals in certain areas can sometimes give a foreboding feeling or a lighthearted feeling that tends to keep the reader focused on what is going on at hand. It also makes the reader think about all the possible paths that the characters can take and any implications it might have for them. Also Riordan uses the environment to shape the characters and there traits based on the experience they have gained from the world around them. In my opinion the use of the setting in "The House of Hades" makes the book many times better than its precursors in the fact that the setting fits in with the story line of the book and the path that has been laid before them to reach the location known as the Gates Of Death instead of just jumping around and then randomly adding something in to make sense later.
